If the approaching holiday season has put you in a charitable mood, you would be wise to pursue our annual evaluation of America’s 200 largest nonprofits. Taking the perspective of a would-be donor, we focus on financial efficiencies. These numbers can tell you a lot but are by no means the entire story. Our list is no substitute for your own research.

And, with more than a million nonprofits in the U.S., there’s a lot to research. The 200 on our list reported average gifts of $198 million, up 20% from last year. Almost matching that increase: the 18% jump in top pay (usually that of the nonprofit’s top person) to $486,878.
